Ethel Pew Trail Natural Habitats of the area – Directly around the corner just several minutes walk from Highland Manor is the Ethel Pew Forest and Nature Conservancy that is part of the Equinox Highlands and teaches kids and adults how man can coexist with nature in harmony.

Trail Head

The Merck Forest Farmland and Preserve is an expansive region of natural woodland habitat which is in the mountains just minutes drive from Highland Manor. It sports a wonderfully full schedule of educational outdoor events and activities for old and young alike.  This family oriented nature preserve is designed to entertain and inform adults and children of all ages as to the growth and development of a land preserve and how man can utilize resources in harmony with nature.

In Manchester, also minutes away from the Manor, is located Nearby Mount EquinoxThe Equinox Preserve, 850 acres of pristine forestland on the eastern side of Mount Equinox that has miles of walking and hiking terrain for all levels of experience.   Hildene the summer estate for President Abraham Lincoln’s ancestors has walking and hiking paths and double as cross country ski trails in the winter.  These natural preserves provide outdoor family enjoyment in all seasons.
 
The Library Hiking, jogging, biking and horseback riding – There are many area trails and back roads perfect for most of the above activities, in fact, Highland Manor has many acres of wooded land just out the back door which are perfect for exploring with the whole family.  If you are looking for specific hiking trail recommendations the owners are happy to assist in any way.  The closest well marked hiking trail is within a new nature conservancy recently opened up around the corner from Highland Manor The Ethel Pew Nature Conservancy. It has the Pew Forest Trail which is 1.4 miles of newly cleared and well marked hiking trail.   Trail Head
 
 
Next closest is The Equinox Preserve which has miles and miles of trails for a variety of levels of experience.  This preserve has the scenic Robins Lookout Trail, the Trillium Trail, the Maidenhair Trail, Mt. Bluff Trail, The Trout Trail and Pond Loop, and the more difficult Blue Summit Trail which takes you to the very top of Mount Equinox on a day long hike for the adventurous hiker.  
 
The Hildene Estate has its 14 kilometers of walking and hiking trails which have rolling terrain for the hiker that enjoys the beauty of the quiet forest walking path.  It also has a number of educational summertime nature camps tailored for children and teaching these budding naturalists how to interact with nature without injuring our variety of ecosystems.  
 
Just on the outskirts of Lye Brook Trail Manchester are the trail heads of the Lye Brook Trail and the Bourn Pond Trails.  These provide exercise as hikers move through the cozy Vermont forest carrying them along various elevation changes.
 
The Merck Forest Preserve also has many miles of wonderful hiking and walking trails which are well marked.    
 
Then, there is the Appalachian Trail and Vermont Long Trail which follows the ridge of the Green Mountains and is minutes from the Manor.  The back roads of Vermont are the perfect place to do biking trips and to run along.  The roads directly around Highland Manor are great for long walks, jogging and horseback riding.  The Vermont Summer Festival, (the acclaimed New England Horse shows), have outstanding equestrian events for the avid equestrian aficionado. 
 
Vermont Skier Skiing Bromley Mountain, deemed the family mountain, offers great skiing. Bromley’s well groomed ski slopes are 15 minutes from Highland Manor, and sport a variety of terrain for novice, intermediate and expert levels.  Magic Mountain also is within striking distance and Stratton Mountain ski area is just a few miles farther. Excellent cross-country skiing trails are nearby. Both resorts offer summertime activities as well including alpine slides, zip line rides, tennis and golf.
 
Golf – The Manchester region has six golf courses including the historic Vermont's best golf courses Dorset Field Club, The Manchester Country Club, The Gleneagles Course at The Equinox, Lake St. Catherine Country Club, The Ekwanok, Stratton Mountain Country Club; these courses will test your driving, chipping, and putting abilities while being surrounded by scenic vistas.
 
 
Fishing – The famous Orvis Company is centered in Manchester and specializes in fishing supplies with an emphasis on fly fishing.  It is located next to the fly fishing training center and fly fishing museum (hall of fame). The renowned Battenkill and Mettowee River basins are nearby, with outstanding trout fishing.
